Critical Environment Technician – Electrical/Mechanical

About the role

As a Critical Environment Technician (CET) in Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation team, you will ensure the reliability of datacenter infrastructure by maintaining electrical, mechanical and control systems. You will work on‑site, responding to incidents, performing preventive maintenance, and using telemetry to monitor equipment performance.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as an operations specialist in a major area of critical environment (electrical, mechanical, controls, generators) and execute advanced tasks independently.
• Inspect and supervise HVAC, mechanical, and other critical facility equipment, identifying unsafe or abnormal conditions.
• Use the internal Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track assets and complete work orders.
• Lead onsite incident response teams, coordinate corrective repairs, and ensure rapid restoration of normal operations.
• Collaborate with vendors, suppliers and other critical facilities professionals to resolve issues.

Required profile

• Hands‑on understanding of electrical, mechanical and control systems used in datacenters.
• Ability to work independently and make decisions in high‑pressure situations.
• Strong safety awareness and adherence to Microsoft’s policies and standards.
• Effective communication skills for coordinating with cross‑functional teams.

Required skills

• Experience with HVAC systems.
• Knowledge of electrical systems and generators.
• Familiarity with mechanical systems and controls.
• Proficiency in using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Ability to interpret telemetry and monitoring platforms.
