Research Scientist – AI for Video Compression

About the role

Qualcomm's Multimedia R&D and Standards Group is seeking a Research Scientist to advance learning‑based video compression. You will work with a world‑renowned team developing neural video coding technologies and shaping future video compression standards.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and optimize novel learning‑based video compression algorithms, including neural video coding, learned motion representation, and entropy modeling.
• Evaluate and improve neural and hybrid compression systems using state‑of‑the‑art machine learning techniques and rate‑distortion optimization.
• Represent Qualcomm in standardization forums such as JVET, MPEG Video, and ITU‑T/VCEG.
• Document and present new algorithms through standards contributions, patent applications, conference papers, and journal publications.

Required profile

• PhD or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or a related field (or a Bachelor’s with 4+ years of relevant experience).
• Strong analytical and creative abilities with a passion for machine learning, neural compression, and video coding.
• Track record of research accomplishments demonstrated by publications at leading conferences and/or patent filings.

Required skills

• Python programming
• C/C++ programming
• Machine‑learning frameworks, especially PyTorch
• Knowledge of video compression standards (VVC/H.266, HEVC/H.265, AV1)
• Experience with neural video coding and rate‑distortion optimization
