Managing Editor – Asia

About the role

Radio Free Asia is seeking a Managing Editor to lead its Asia editorial operation. Based in Taipei, the role oversees the Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean and international desks, ensuring 24‑hour news coverage across a complex media landscape.

Key responsibilities

• Set the daily editorial agenda for all Asia desks and drive timely, high‑quality publication.
• Maintain consistent editorial standards, safety protocols and legal compliance across the region.
• Manage Editors in Charge, allocate resources, resolve cross‑desk conflicts and uphold clear accountability.
• Recruit, develop and mentor editorial staff, including hiring new editors and fostering professional growth.
• Collaborate with the Managing Editor in Washington to guarantee seamless 24‑hour newsroom continuity.
• Escalate high‑stakes stories, safety concerns and legal issues to senior decision‑makers as needed.

Required profile

• Extensive editorial leadership experience in international journalism, preferably covering high‑surveillance or closed‑society environments.
• Deep understanding of the political, cultural and media contexts of China, North Korea, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, Laos and surrounding regions.
• Proven ability to make rapid editorial decisions under pressure while safeguarding staff and audience safety.
• Strong people‑management skills, including recruiting, coaching and performance management.
