Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Hardware Certification & Test

About the role

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Ubuntu Hardware Certification Quality and Test Engineering team. You will guide the development of test suites that validate hardware compatibility across Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server, working closely with silicon partners, OEMs and internal teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead development and maintenance of Canonical’s hardware certification test suite.
• Ensure timely delivery of certifications for PC OEM and ODM partners.
• Collaborate to continuously improve test practices, tools and automation.
• Build and lead a globally distributed engineering team, providing coaching and career development.
• Set and manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
• Participate in code, test plan and architectural reviews as part of strong engineering processes.
• Engage with Canonical teams, the open‑source community and commercial partners.
• Travel internationally twice a year for company events.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of low‑level embedded software and hardware (BIOS, firmware, bootloaders, ACPI, devicetree, kernel, RTOS).
• Good understanding of Linux system architecture.
• Experience with quality and reliability‑focused engineering practices.
• Outstanding academic record and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
• Proven leadership, mentorship and talent‑development abilities.
• Track record of delivering high‑quality software on schedule.
• Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
• Passion for technology demonstrated through personal projects or initiatives.

Required skills

• BIOS, firmware, bootloaders, ACPI, devicetree, kernel, RTOS.
• Linux (Ubuntu/Debian) system architecture.
• Python programming.
• Continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) tools.
• Automated testing frameworks for hardware enablement.
• Familiarity with ARM, x86 and RISC‑V architectures.
