About the role
This role is part of Canonical's general engineering track, focusing on low‑level system software for autonomous devices across x86, ARM and RISC‑V platforms. Engineers work on memory‑constrained, high‑performance code that must run reliably in demanding environments.
Key responsibilities
- Work with the latest Linux kernel and open‑source technologies to deliver Ubuntu for IoT and server‑class hardware.
- Integrate and maintain device‑oriented software stacks, build device OS images and optimise kernel and libraries for silicon‑specific capabilities.
- Debug issues, write high‑quality code, and contribute technical documentation.
- Collaborate with globally distributed teams and engage with the open‑source community.
Required profile
- Strong academic background in Computer Science or related STEM field.
- Passion for Linux, embedded systems and low‑level software development.
- Professional fluency in English and ability to travel twice a year.
Required skills
- Experience with Linux (Debian/Ubuntu preferred).
- Proficiency in at least one language: Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
- Knowledge of build systems, cross‑compilation, firmware, U‑Boot, UEFI, ACPI and boot loaders.
- Understanding of x86, ARM and RISC‑V architectures and power‑management techniques.
