Research Director

About the role

IDC is looking for a Research Director to lead research and insights on the datacenter and consumer storage media market. The role covers hard drives, SSDs, tape media and other persistent media, and requires both qualitative and quantitative expertise.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain direct relationships with global storage media suppliers and vendors.
• Create market models for various media types that feed into IDC’s data products.
• Deliver rich industry insights on manufacturing, supply‑chain vendors and adoption trends.
• Collaborate with infrastructure and device analysts to integrate findings into broader platform and system research.
• Interact regularly with clients to update them on market trends and advise on technical and business strategies.
• Travel regionally (30‑50%) and to the US 2‑3 times a year, with local travel within Taiwan.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Computer Science or Computer Engineering is a plus).
• At least 10 years of experience in the IT industry, preferably at a storage media vendor or market research firm.
• Strong quantitative abilities and experience building comprehensive market models.
• Excellent writing skills for publishing professional research notes.
• Analytical, adaptable, problem‑solving and presentation capabilities.

Required skills

• Advanced Microsoft Excel for market modeling.
• Familiarity with database management systems (DBMS) – a plus.
