Staff Product Design Engineer

About the role

Google's XR team is shaping the next wave of technology by merging AI with extended reality (XR). As a Staff Product Design Engineer you will help create lightweight XR devices such as smart glasses and headsets that deliver personalized, conversational, and context‑aware experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Design complex subsystems and individual parts from concept through production, including fixtures for high‑precision automated assembly.
• Collaborate with global suppliers throughout the design and manufacturing lifecycle.
• Lead system assembly discussions, prototype development, and tooling decisions to meet mechanical, optical, and reliability targets.
• Identify root causes of design, manufacturing, or reliability issues and implement corrective actions.
• Travel internationally (~20%) to oversee mechanical validation, design, and assembly at engineering builds.
• Balance functionality, sustainability, reliability, human factors, manufacturability, and aesthetics in design decisions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Electrical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Minimum 6 years of experience in consumer electronics or product design environments.
• At least 3 years of technical leadership experience.
• Preferred: 10 years of consumer product design experience with a proven record of shipping multiple products.
• Deep knowledge of electro‑mechanical components (audio, display, antenna), waterproofing, thermals, grounding, and product architecture.
• Experience collaborating with global suppliers on part production, assembly, and on‑site factory support.
• Proven ability to lead tolerance analysis, Gauge R&R, process validation studies, and proof‑of‑concept display builds.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD tools such as NX, Creo, or SolidWorks.
• Electro‑mechanical component design and integration.
• Waterproofing, thermal management, and grounding techniques.
• Product architecture and system‑level design.
• Manufacturing methods and supplier collaboration.
• Tolerance analysis and Gauge R&R methodology.
