Software Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Enablement

About the role

Canonical’s Device Delivery Team is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead the Ubuntu Enablement effort for tier‑1 OEM and ODM customers. You will oversee a team that pre‑loads Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core onto devices, delivering high‑quality solutions to millions of users.

Key responsibilities

• Recruit, motivate, mentor and enable the engineering team to deliver quality products.
• Set goals, prioritize tasks, track team health indicators and support career growth.
• Coordinate with project managers, hardware engineering, QA and certification teams.
• Monitor projects from kickoff through post‑mortem and manage escalations.
• Communicate technical challenges with OEMs, ODMs, SiPs and IHVs and prioritize global customer requests.
• Collaborate with product engineering groups such as Desktop, Foundations, Kernel and Security.
• Provide leadership on methodologies, standards, tools and best practices.
• Travel to the EU, USA, China and Taiwan as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, preferably computer science or software engineering.
• Proven technical experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu or Debian.
• Management experience leading software engineering teams.
• Strong collaboration skills in a globally distributed environment.
• Excellent English and Chinese communication, both written and verbal.

• Linux system knowledge and low‑level debugging.
• Ubuntu Core, kernel and userspace development.
• Packaging formats: deb, snap.
• Virtualisation and containers: QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Docker/Kubernetes.
• Programming languages: Python, Go, C, Bash.
• Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB.
• Open‑source development and CI/CD pipelines.
